Meet the Geographer: We recently interviewed #GeoGator Dr. Gaby Hamerlinck about her #MedGeo research studying host-parasite interactions, quantitative biology education, & improving inclusion and accessibility in STEM education. Gaby is a Lecturer of Medical Geography at UF. Link in comments.
Summer Science hacks! Mallow and dill are easy-to-grow butterfly host plants, great project for teaching about insect life cycles and symbiosis in K-12 biology. Post your easiest, most affordable science unschooling/project-based resources here!
The most detailed HIV model, created using data from over 100 different studies. They depicted the proteins in just two basic colors: Gray equals host, orange equals virus. [x-post from r/biology]
In biological terms, parasites aren't merely opportunistic, they're harmful to their host, sucking away crucial nutrients or taking over their brains.
A nanosystem attempts to repair a damaged DNA strand of its biological host.
Of course you work alone, Master Bruce. I, your ever faithful butler, driver, assistant, and medic, know this. Shall I notify The JLA, Outsiders, Birds of Prey, your host of sidekicks, proteges, fill ins, biological and adopted children, inter-dimensional-magical-‘mini me’ and girlfriend as well?
“God I hope he’s not on Psych Meds!!” I was _in this conversation_ and I got so flipped out I nearly became an “insane person of FB” myself — my biological host / ‘mother’ convinced me that psych meds were a trick / trap and if I ever went in mental hospital, I’d be lost and forgotten.
The hosts are made out of working biological organs.
Biology of the Revenant - Rules of Vampirism in the Ghost Town Novels
I must confess this one got me
TERF hosting a “Womxn’s March,” alone, next to some toilets, and playing the same 4 notes while singing “trans women are men.”
[Round 76223] Below is a diagram drawn by my biology teacher, what part of the human body is this?
Alien Ship (Living, Biological), black color emphasis, flat-head with headpiece, no arms, large feet, single exhaust, Coords: +61.13, +111.12
Stay safe my fellow biological meat sacks.
if gender and sex are different things, then how come a children's tv show host said they weren't???
This is completely and oddly terrifying 👀
What kind of robots are hosts exaclty? It seems they have evolved from mechanical humanoids into biological beings(w/ chips?) over the past 30 years.
[Round 56604] This bacteria appears on articles related to biology, geology and physics/chemistry. Binomial name, and what can it have 300 times the level of?
This Week In Biology (10/03/2015)!
My friends hosted a female only DJing workshop this past weekend in Vancouver!
Aquarium ready for fish? New tank (42 gal) setup, cycled in with transplanted ceramic biological media. Ammonia is a controlled substance in this country, so cycling done with fish food. Tap water comes out at 0.25ppm so that should be the baseline. Seeking assurance, too excited to jump the gun!
Have had the thought of drawing this what-if for a while. Enjoy Bijuu mode Kushina.
Season 2 Intro - will the hosts be able to reproduce?
Biological control in progress
who would win: millions of years of evolution vs 1 spiky boi
The one-of-a-kind SCP hoodie I got for Christmas.
What is this? It was attached to the tail of a catfish and was hard to take off. Nobody around knew what it was and neither did a game warden we know. It was a squishy stomach and tiny legs underneath. Fish was caught in brackish water in Louisiana. It’s not moving anywhere but it’s legs wiggle some
Biology teacher wrote this during class.
Science Behind the Border
The most detailed HIV model, created using data from over 100 different studies. They depicted the proteins in just two basic colors: Gray equals host, orange equals virus.
I study parasites, here are some cercaria (animals that cause swimmers itch) found in mud snails
"Parasites attacking a predator of another parasite attacking its host."
I was dissecting a kokanee salmon in class and found these weird spheres. My teacher is stumped, so if anyone can confirm they're a parasite or something that'd be great! I believe that's the stomach they're attached to?
The reproductive cells, called oocytes, of a malaria parasite developing on a mosquito’s intestinal wall. When these oocytes rupture, they release sporozoites that travel to the mosquito’s salivary glands. From there, they can infect a vertebrate host.
Old enough for the truth.
Parasitoidism in action! I've been keeping a caterpillar in a jar, and this afternoon discovered that it's the host to parasitoidism. The larvae burst out of its body, and even more terrifying: it's still alive.
This came across my Twitter feed this morning. The image is the truth, however the person posting it spouts nonsense like "life begins at conception," and "abortion is murder," so I'm not liking directly to his Twitter.
